PickUP WIZ!
For Brown & Sharpe Screw Machines
Getting Results Doesn't Get Any Easier!
Pickup WIZ is a Brown & Sharpe screw machine engineering tool that quickly gets results to improve tool wear and cycle time. Pickup WIZ will reduce the guesswork when using pickup cams. You no longer have to use “educating guessing” or cumbersome calculations for cycle times (Seconds), Hundreds, or Spindles Speeds. You won’t have to cringe any longer wondering if the tap is going to break due to improper Spindle Speed or Seconds. This tool can ALWAYS be desktop-handy and ready!

Pickup WIZ Standard Features
Feature #1Problem – Tool is wearing. We suspect that the feed is incorrect.
Solution – Enter the Spindle Speed & Seconds. Then enter the Hundreds and Rise on tool lobe. Click Pickup the Pickup WIZ Apply button and instantly get the Feed for the tool.
Example:
The job is running in 8 Seconds at 2150 Spindle
Speed. The tool lobe (Drill) has 15 Hundreds and
.321 Rise on the lead cam.
Pickup WIZ instantly calculates = .0075 Feed per rev on the tool lobe.
With this information the Seconds can be adjusted to correct the Feed.
Problem – Reduce the feed from .0075 to .006 from the example above.
Solution – Change Spindle Speed a
notch higher or reduce Seconds.
Click the Pickup WIZ Apply button and instantly adjust the Feed for
your conformation.
Example:
Job is running in 8 Seconds at 2150 RPM. The tool lobe (Drill) has 15 Hundreds and .321 rise on the lead cam.(1.) Adjust Spindle Speed higher to 2660 and WIZ instantly calculates the new feed.
Wiz result = .006 Feed
(2.) Adjust cycle time from 8 seconds to 10 seconds.
Wiz result = .006 Feed.
With this information the Seconds can be adjusted to correct the feed.
Feature #2
Find Hundreds for Pickup Cam
· Problem
– The Lead Cam is ready to go, but we need a front cross slide cam for a form
tool. Rise is known, but not the
correct Hundreds. We want to use as many Hundreds as possible to
reduce heat, tool wear and breakage.
Solution – Enter Spindle Speed and Seconds.
Then enter the Feed desired, and Rise on
tool lobe. Click the Pickup WIZ Apply button and instantly get the
correct Hundreds for the tool.
Example:
The job is running in 20 Seconds at 1500 Spindle Speed. The desired Feed on the front cross slide cam is .001 with existing Rise of .251.Enter these 4 figures above and Pickup WIZ instantly calculates the result.
Pickup Wiz Result = 50 Hundreds
Feature #3
Find Seconds for Pickup
Cam with Tap
· Problem
– The Lead Cam is ready to go with cycle times to reflect feed on most critical
tools. However, the job has a tapped hole (or external thread). Incorrect
cycle time or incorrect Low Spindle Speed can, and will usually destroy the tap
(or chasers).
Solution – Enter Spindle Speed and Seconds.
Then enter the Threads Per Inch (TPI) desired,
and Rise on tool lobe. Click the
Pickup WIZ Apply button and instantly get the correct Hundreds for
the tool.
Example:
We know that to get the correct Feed rates, and based on those Feed rates, the job should not run faster then 27.5 Seconds with a high Spindle Speed of 2150. Or course we tap at a low speed of about 5 to 1, or approx 450 RPM.
We enter this data into Pickup Wiz:Hundreds on Lead Cam tap lobe = 8
Rise on Lead Cam tap lobe = .400
Low Spindle Speed = 450
Threads Per Inch (TPI) = 32Pickup Wiz result = 23.7 seconds. (Too fast)
Quick Fix:
Lower the Low Spindle Speed with a few clicks to 395Pickup Wiz result = 27 seconds. (Acceptable)
Feature #4
Find Surface Feet per Minute
(SFM)
· Problem
– Job is running. We suspect the job is running too slow.
The current Spindle Speed is 500 RPM for 5/8 Diameter
Stainless Steel.
Solution – Enter the .625 and Current Spindle Speed.
Pickup Wiz result = 81 SFM. (Too slow, recommended is 120 SFM)
The above answer alerts us to use the next feature of Pickup Wiz
Feature #5
Find Spindle Speed
· Problem
– Job is running. We suspect that job is running too slow.
From using the step above, we know that the SFM is currently at 81 for
5/8 Diameter Stainless Steel.
Solution – Enter the .625 and recommended SFM 120.
Pickup Wiz result = 732 Spindle Speed.
This result shows a significant increase to improve cycle time, and we can use Pickup Wiz’s next feature.
Feature #6
Find Seconds for Pickup Cam
· Problem
– Need to find Cycle Time (Seconds). Determine cycle time based on
the job’s most critical tool lobe.
Solution – Enter Spindle Speed. Then enter the Feed desired
for most critical lobe, and enter the corresponding Rise and Hundreds on
tool lobe. Click use Pickup WIZ and instantly get the correct Seconds for
the job cycle time.
Example:
Most critical lobe in the Lead Cam is for a Trepan Tool.Spindle Speed = 1180
Max feed = .002
Hundreds on most critical tool lobe = 8
Rise on most critical tool lobe = .090Pickup Wiz result = 28.6 Seconds, or round to 30 seconds
